Shopping Guide for Madeira
The major shopping malls in Madeira are not surprisingly in Funchal. From Madeira Shopping, the largest shopping mall in Madeira, to small shops selling Madeira wine, embroidery, tapestries and wicker products, Madeira also has an impressive market, Mercado dos Lavradores. Many shopping centres and malls are open until 10:00 pm.
For Madeira souvenirs, there are several wine merchants in Funchal offering wine tasting before purchase. The main centre in Madeira for buying wickerwork is in the village of Camacha but there are numerous shops in Funchal selling wicker as well. Madeira embroidered linen is exquisite and makes a delightful gift or souvenir of your Madeira holiday.
'Madeira Shopping', located in Santa Quitéria, is the largest shopping mall on Madeira Island, and also features many restaurants, cinemas and entertainment venues offering bowling, virtual reality machines and mini-golf as well as nearly 1000 parking spaces.
Avenida Arriaga, one of Madeira's most famous shopping streets, is also home to the Marina Mall, the largest shopping mall in Funchal. The small, yet uniquely attractive Galerias de São Lourenço, located a few steps away, is a favourite with many tourists. Galerias de São Francisco, with its interesting shops and snack bars, is also connected to the Madeira Wine Company - providing leisure travellers with a great opportunity to visit the wine company and enjoy the world famous Madeira Wine.
Looking for Madeira souvenirs? The embroidery, wickerwork and needlework artisans of Madeira produce excellent souvenirs or gifts. The village of Camacha features the biggest selection of wicker products, whilst beautiful embroidery work can be found in the city centre of Funchal where Patrico & Gouveia and Bordac-Bordados de Madeira sell fine handmade goods.
Funchal's daily Workers' Market (Mercado dos Lavradores) at Rua Hospital Velho is also a great place to source many of Madeira's specialties, from exotic flowers and local craft work to fresh fish and vegetables.
Visitors to Madeira can also choose from a wonderful variety of exquisite flowers available in florists all over the island, and no trip to the islands can be complete without purchasing Madeira wine.
